Visible Monday: Scarf Belt, Crab Feed and Nude Shoes

Happy Monday, friends!

How was your weekend?

Friday, my husband, Bill, and I went to his daughter's high school for an early afternoon rally. Tori was in a lip psyching competition with five of her friends. They choreographed a dance to the song "Mr. Blue Sky" by Electric Light Orchestra.

It was such a darling performance. They walked away with first place honors and a $75.00 prize that they plan on putting towards a big dinner out for the six of them. I wish I had some photos to show you but they didn't turn out - too dark in the auditorium and we stood too far away. Darn!

After her performance, Bill and I went out to lunch. It was raining out, just a drizzle, but enough for me to wear a trench and bring an umbrella.

I have been itching to try this look I pinned to my Pinterest scarf board.

This is from the "How to Wear Your Hermès Scarf" booklet issued by Hermès in 1988.
Thank you, Marsi, for solving the mystery of its origins.

I chose my khaki Banana Republic trench (like this one) and a Celine nautical themed silk scarf in navy blue, gold and cream that I bought used on eBay last year. It's not in the best condition and has a few blemishes so I'm not too worried about sitting on it.

I folded it this way....

From Hermès and MaiTai's Picture Book

then passed it through my belt loops, after I removed the belt, of course.

We took photos after the performance and lunch,
which results in wrinkled jeans and wrinkled trench.

I wore my trench with skinny jeans, Forever 21 navy blue cable knit sweater, navy suede wedge pumps (not a smart choice for wet weather, but they survived), and a few strands of faux pearls with gold accents.

And I carried my favorite umbrella. I was being a bit dramatic carrying an umbrella - it was not really raining that much. But with this weird dry season we're having, I will take what I can get.

And added benefit of the scarf tied in back is that is cinches my waist, giving me more of a curvy silhouette.

Later that afternoon, I changed into a red top and wore my new Steve Madden patent blush colored pumps*.

Which look do you favor? I can't make up my mind. I've never worn nude pumps before and I'm not sure how I feel about them.

The rest of the weekend was all about crab! Our local fire department, the one that will soon have my husband at the helm, had its annual crab feed fundraiser. All three of Bill's kids and his son's girlfriend,Veronica, helped out along with Bill and me.

I thought I'd share a few shots from the event.

Bill, Tori and me. To give you an idea of how tall Bill and I are, Tori is 5' 8".

Tori and Veronica on crab duty.

Ryan, with just a small amount of the 1350 pounds of crab
the guys picked up in Bodega Bay that morning.

Veronica and Tori before they got crabby.

Don't forget to visit Visible Monday and Monday Mingle to see what all the participants are wearing today!

XO,

Adrienne

* All three pairs of shoes I mentioned ordering in this post have arrived but the dress they're meant for is in the shop for repairs. The dress will be back in my possession by week's end and I'll be sure to post photos wearing all three pairs of shoes, but not at the same time.

Love both looks! What a clever idea for the scarf.

I love that scarf idea and will be trying it soon. Thanks! I think I like the nude pumps best.

I think both looks are great, and love the scarf action! The crab looks so delicious, hope it was a very successful fundraiser.

Very clever idea. Both looks are great, you should wear red more often!

Patti @ NotDeadYet Style said...

Wow, that's some pile of crabs - good work, guys! I adore your new trench-with-scarf idea, and can't wait to try it myself. I do love the nude pumps too - are you on the fence about them? Thanks for linking up to Visible Monday, you look wonderful.

I love nude shoes...but with the skinny jeans I think I like the dark ones better.

I had no idea Tori is so tall too!

LOVE the scarf idea because I hate the belt on my trench and this looks so much more chic. Merci!

Your trench looks very chic.

The image you asked about is from the "How to Wear Your Hermès Scarf" booklet issued by Hermès in 1988. The company sent it to me after I wrote to request a catalog, and it touched off an obsession with Hermès scarves that wasn't satisfied till 2000, when I finally purchased my first scarf. Anyway, it's a cool way to wear a scarf.

Btw, I made your chicken tikka masala tonight with cauliflower "rice." I added ghee, saffron, peas, and a little salt to the "rice" and OMG. We couldn't believe how good it was. Indian food has always been a guilty pleasure for us due to the carbs -- but not anymore ....

Great chic look. The trench never disappoints! And such a good idea to put the scarf on the back!

Terri said...

Whoa, you ARE tall! I like this scarf look, but I think I like the nude shoes better.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Ercuan I, too, thought it was clever. Sometimes the belt on coats starts to wear sooner than the coat itself. This is a great way to fix that problem. I just donated a black coat for that very reason. Darn!

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Stephanie Thank you for your input on the shoes. I think I am not used to having such a light color on my feet. I'll have to wear them again soon to get used to them.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@déjà pseuIt was successful. The coordinators always make sure we get the best tasting and freshest crab. You should come up and join us next year!

Adrienne Shubin said...

@LR @ Magnificent or Egregious I have never been a wearer of red. I only own this top shown here and a little jacket I bought in Paris five years ago. I don't know why I don't have more of it! I should probably do something about that once my spending freeze is over.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Patti @ NotDeadYet Style I am on the fence about them but they've already been worn so they won't be going back to Steve Madden. They are a little big and I am not used to wearing such a pale color on my feet. It feels weird, but I think I'll get used to that. I need to spend a little time experimenting with different outfits.

Thank you for hosting VM every week! xo, A

@Suburban Princess I have a pair of great fitting blue jeans that are getting hemmed (yes, that is a first) at my seamstress's. I think they will look great with the nude pumps.

I don't think of Tori as tall - she is the short one in the family at 5'8". Weird, I know. You know what they say: everything is relative!

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Anonymous Hi Bliss (i know it's you because you emailed me). It is a great alternative to an ugly or worn out belt. I wish I had thought of it before I donated a winter coat last week. It was a fine coat but had a belt that was trashed and unfixable.

Let me know your thoughts if you try it! xo

Adrienne Shubin said...

@LuxeBytes Oh thank you, Marsi! I doubted I would ever find the source of that photo. I can't tell you how many different words I used to search Google images.

I am thrilled to hear that you liked the Chicken Tikka Masala and that the "rice" was a hit. Saffron is an excellent idea. I will add some next time...just happen to have a few threads.

Thank you again for solving the mystery. I have already changed the caption to reflect the source.

xo, Adrienne

@Sylvia @ 40PlusStyle Thank you, Sylvia. I wish I could take credit for the scarf idea, but I have to give all of it to Hermes.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Terri Yes. We are all giants here at Chez Shubin! I need to get used to the nude shoes. Thank you for letting me know you like them. I am sure they will grow on me!

Looking good girl! Both looks are fab.

My gosh you're a tall pair. Knew you were tall, but didn't realise the full extent of it!

Pam @ over50feeling40 said...

I like them both, but I really favor the first one with the darker shoes and the scarf idea is really fun!! I am loving my trench, purchased after Christmas, and we have had so much rain that I wear it alot right now. Can't go wrong with a great trench!

What a fun weekend for you.

You look smashing, but my eye is really drawn to the red and nude.

Have a great week!

Rachel Marie said...

I love your sense of style! So classy and pretty. The scarf on the trench is such a cool idea. I'll have to try that with my own trench sometime :)

I love the scarf with the trench! I will be trying it out when I can switch over from my winter coat to spring trench!

I like the nude shoes better, it matches your coat!

Adrienne Shubin said...

@My Beautiful World Thank you, Wendy! I hope you will have a great Valentine's Day as well.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@The Distressed Mother Yes, we are freakishly tall. We joke that the only reason we married is because are heights are compatible.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Pam @ over50feeling40 Lucky you that you've been getting lots of rain. I love rain and have been deprived of it most of the season here in California.

My trench coats have been among the smartest purchases I've made.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Leigh Powell Hines The red definitely adds color whereas the blue sweater sort of blends in with my jeans. I am not wild about the fit of the red top - it's clingy, so I have to wear it when I am feeling slim.
Tomorrow is Valentine's Day, as I am sure you know. I think I will create an outfit around this red top for the occasion. Or maybe I'll just wear this exact same getup and make it easy on myself!

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Rachel Marie Welcome Rachel Marie! Thank you for the kind comment. I hope you give the trench/scarf look a try.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Marmie You must live somewhere chilly. I have been waiting to be able to wear my trench as it's been so warm here this winter. It actually bugs me because I like changing seasons and it feel like we are skipping one this year!

Hopefully, you will be able to switch your coat for your trench soon!

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Anonymous They do match my coat. Maybe I need to try different jeans - that may be what I am not liking in that photo.

I like the French vibe here today! Love it all!

That crab looks amazing, sounds like you had a great weekend.

Tabitha said...

Very clever idea, knowing me it would come undone and drop in a puddle. Wow, you are so tall, I'd look like a pixie next to your family.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@hostess of the humble bungalow Well, I always like it when I can create a French vibe!
The crab was very tasty. I like to think we have the best crab feed - the crab is so fresh and the members of the department make it such a fun event.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Tabitha I did worry about the scarf soiling. It's on pretty tight so I don't think it would come loose. But there is that chance that I'll brush up against something or dirty it on a chair somewhere. That's why the Celine scarf is ideal - I don't really care what happens to it. It's already got a few marks on it.

I am so tall. I wish I had stopped at 6 feet even, but I kept on growing and am actually a bit over 6' 2". It makes buying pants and dresses very challenging.

Rebekah said...

So fun and chic! Today is a rainy day here, and I know just what to do with the boring belt on my trench...

Looking skinny!

Debbi@SheAccessorizesWell said...

You look fabulous in everything! Thank you for sharing the scarf idea. I have a jacket that will be perfect for a scarf.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Rebekah Just make sure you use a scarf you don't mind getting wet in the rain. I'd love to try my one and only Hermes scarf with my black trench one day. But I'll have to be very careful I don't soil or mar it.

Thank you for the skinny compliment. It's all thanks to no sugar, low carbs - the only thing that works for me.

annie said...

I love the idea and the look...do you feel it's fairly secure? I would worry a silk scarf might come undone and probably as the subway doors closed I would notice it...I love that you have a pinterest board for scarves...why didn't I think of that? I'm sure you've seen Wendy's Look Book...25 ways to tie a scarf. It's adorable and I learned so much.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Debbi@SheAccessorizesWell Do please let me know if you try the scarf as coat belt look. I'd love to hear what you thought.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@annie The scarf is very secure. I never really even thought about that. I did worry that it would get really dirty - that I would sit on or brush up against something and soil it. But nothing happened, thankfully.

I have seen Wendy's look book. I am slowly getting through the different ways to wear scarves. Did you see the one with three silk scarves tied together to make one long one? It's my next project.

What a fun idea with the trench! I am loving the skinny jeans on you and both shoes are great!

I love your blog. I just found it a couple of days ago. I have never posted on someone else's blog until now. My fav of the two outfits is the red top and nude shoes but both are great looks! Now if I could just figure out how to use Pinterest. I love the idea of having a place to put ideas and reminders.

Adrienne Shubin said...

@lowcarbhighstyle Thanks! I am conflicted about the skinny jeans too. I think I'll post about them soon...they feel so foreign to me!

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Cheryl April Berry Tucker Hi Cheryl! I am so pleased to be the first person you've left a comment for!

If you want some Pinterest instructions, I have some that my sister gave to me. I will email them to you in the hopes that it helps. Pinterest is lots of fun. But it can be a time sucker, too!

Shayla said...

Hi doll - I love both looks but I think I'm favoring the blue wedges although I LOVE a nude pump! The scarf idea is brilliant!

Jeannie @ gracefully50 said...

The scarf idea is too good...will have to try that!
I love nude pumps...goes with pretty much anything. How I wish I were 5'8"!
Happy Valentine's Day to you and yours!

Mongs said...

what a fabulous idea to give shape to a trench coat without a belt. You look classy, beautiful and elegant, as always. The pearls are just the right amount of accessories. Haha...your whole family are so tall. I would look like a midget beside you, I'm just 5'2". Wow...looks at the amount of crab you had...yumm.

Happy Valentine's day!

So smart! Love the quick update. Super chic.

Sara Louise said...

I prefer the blush pump but I'm a sucker for a nude shoe so I might be biased. But, the scarf looks fantastic with the trench, and I love how you accessorized the navy sweater :-)

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Shayla Thank you, Shayla. I am torn, too. I like them both but lean towards the blue because I am not used to light colors on my feet.

Thank you for stopping by!

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Mongs It does help give the coat shape. The trench is a bit big on me, the cinching of the waist helps slim my middle a lot.

I have many close friends who are your height and somehow we don't look strange together...well, maybe we do and I just don't notice!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Nicole Feliciano Thank you, Nicole!

Adrienne Shubin said...

@Sara Louise I am wearing the nude pumps tomorrow. Hoping I get used to them and learn to love them like you do yours.
