Positively Friday

One day last week, I was home with the TV on the background tuned in to PBS. I heard a man talking about how to be happier and more positive in our daily lives. Of course, my ears pricked up upon hearing the topic. Who doesn't want that?

I stopped what I was doing to have a sit and find out what else Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage, had to say.

One of his five steps to happiness, mentioned in the program, is this:

"Write down three new things you are grateful for each day...Research shows this will significantly improve your optimism even six months later, and raises your success rates significantly."(source)

Shawn confirms for me what I already know is true: focusing on the positive things about your day or week - not just thinking about them, but writing them down - really does make for a happier and richer life.

Positively Friday has a purpose for me. But what I really want is for it to have a purpose for you, too. I want to know what's been positive about your week. Just one thing or ten things. It doesn't matter. Write it down and get it out there. I promise, you'll be glad you did.

Here are just a handful of things that have been positive about my week:

~ Tori has been nominated for Homecoming Queen at her high school! We will find out next week if she will be crowned. Bill and I are very excited for her, but not all that surprised.

Tori has so many friends, is kind and generous to everyone she meets, makes excellent grades and is heavily involved in school activities. As always, her dad and I are very proud of her, Homecoming Queen or not.

~ I finally located my ideal pair of oxford shoes. And they didn't cost $400! It seemed all the cute oxfords I liked were a fortune until I saw these beauties on Zappos. They are made by Born and I love them. Comfortable and feminine, the color is rich and the leather soft.

I plan on wearing them with boyfriend jeans, khakis, shorts, long skirts, and maybe even dresses this fall. They are my favorite color for shoes, belts, bags and other accessories.

Last night, I wore them out to dinner with Bill's family. I wore them with a pair of khaki Old Navy shorts, a cognac belt from Large Leather, a white button down (thrifted) and a grey Old Navy cardigan.

Tori and I got in a quick a photo in before we left for dinner. She wore a maxi skirt her aunt made for her over the summer. Isn't it cute?

~ Tori and I spent Wednesday night without Bill because he had an evening meeting. We had a delicious eggplant dish that she sort of made up, based on this recipe. She skipped rolling up the eggplant in favor of layering it and added a wonderfully huge amount of cheese and tomato sauce.

We had a great conversation about upcoming Homecoming festivities, school, and some writing that I've been doing which led to me telling her some things about my past that she didn't know. Nothing too terribly sordid, but things that are not exactly my life's shining moments, if you know what I mean. At nearly 18, she is old enough to hear them. And seemed rather delighted to finally get a little dirt on me.

~  What's more positive than having a good laugh? My friend Erin, who write the blog The Bright Owl, sent me this darling photo because she knows of my low-carb love for all things cauliflower. From pizza crust to crackers to 'potatoes', cauliflower is the vegetable I reach for most. But I have yet to create art with it.

Source

I'm not sure why, but I found this picture much funnier than it probably is to most people.

So tell me:

What's been positive about your week?

Have you told your older children tales that
might put you in a not-so-positive light?

Bought any great shoes lately?

Happy Friday!

XO,

Adrienne

B and I play the "what is the best thing about today" game at dinner - and I love it. It keeps us focused on positive things instead of dwelling on negativity.

I remember when my mom told me about some crazy things she did in college (I was in college) and it just made me laugh because all along I thought she was this perfect all A honor roll student who met my dad her senior year in college and got married - I didn't know about the bumps in the road and some of the crazy things she did - I love hearing those stories - and she loves hearing mine. :)

Allright, I'll be honest, this is a positive week for me, I've sold 4 design pieces at the consigment shop, which equals to an amount of money sufficient to renew my son son's and my own winter wardrobe..and you know what? Those pieces were not mine, I had bought them at the weekly market for next to nothing and resold them I just knew they would sell very well..I'm happy because this little commerces are really a big fun for me and I make other women happy, they can buy designer pieces at only 30% of the retail price!
Adrienne your brogues are fabulous, I am a big fan of Oxfords, I love them with long skirts and ankle length trousers, I bet they look amazing with boyfriend cut Gap trousers, can't wait to see them on you!
As for the confidences to our grown up children..well my boy is too young to hear mama's stories, and then he's a little guy, I don't see myself telling him stories about my past, more natural between a mother and a daughter, which is really nothing special after all...yesterday I was telling him an animated version of Pinocchio during supper, he told me: "oh mama the cartoons are funnier, won't you switch on the tv pleaseeee?"...oh these children! They don't enjoy fairy tales anymore!

Here are my positive Friday moments from this week.

1. My two friends took me to see Cavalia which if you haven't heard of is like Cirque du Soleil but with the addition of horses. They asked if I wanted to go, but I had to say no because I lost my job at the beginning of July and couldn't afford it. A couple of days later they called and told me that they bought me a ticket anyway because they wanted me to be there with them. The show was absolutely fantastic, all the better because we got premium tickets and were able to go to the stables after the show and see the horses and handlers . I am always so touched at the thoughtfulness of my friends.

2. We have a great antiques/clothing market every Sunday downtown and there is a vendor who sells high end resale cashmere for $ 20-to $30 depending on the item. I am a cashmere junkie and mix his items in with my expensive purchases and last Sunday he gave be a great short sleeve sweater I was admiring For Free. I love this man!

3. The weather has been sunny and mild all week, a perfect fall feel in the air. I have been roasting tomatoes and making pesto and putting it all in the freezer for the winter. Today I am harvesting herbs to dry. I absolutley love this time of year and preparing garden fresh produce to enjoy in the winter. NOTE: if you make pesto to freeze omit the parmesan and add to the pesto after it has thawed. Parm doesn't freeze well.

4. My 19 lb. cat who is getting arthritis is responding to a new diet and seems to be less stiff and more comfortable. Please don't think I am over feeding her, she is part Main Coon and is a huge breed.

5. I have been helping a friend to clean and organize her home (it's a long story involving an abusive husband) and she is feeling so much more confident and less stressed than she has been in a long time. She is finally beginning to believe that she is in fact a capable woman and it makes me so happy. She deserves to feel like she is worthy.

All in all a great week!

What a sweet post. Congrats to Tori!

My positives:

Worked on my Ebay/Etsy store and it has paid off.

Started putting away the summer stuff and getting out the Fall clothes (yes!). Streamlining in the process (also known a purging).

Been totally inspired by the Vivienne Files this week.

Bought a pair of super cute ballet flats and british tan/caramel ankle boots for Fall--both on Ebay.

My parents are on their way moving up here (but still will be a nice 1.5hrs away...better than 11 hrs).

Paid off a credit card (from wedding).

Read your blog. : )

Congrats to Tori on her nomination...she would be the perfect Homecoming queen!

I think it's great that you and Tori have such a wonderful relationship. And isn't it nice when they are old enough that we can share things with them about our past that we were not always so perfect. I remember my mom's words to me when I was in my twenties and I had done something stupid..."I was no angel"! :o)

Adrienne,
Your week sounds lovely. Glad you had such a good time with Tori. My week has included the most gorgeous weather--cool and beautiful. I also enjoyed a class on baking country French bread taught by a master French baker who lives nearby. He showed us his techniques for mixing, kneading, and shaping breads. My daughter had given me the class as a gift and she took it with me so it was lots of fun.

You look so fantastic! Im afraid to buy shoes online because of the fit...somewhere between 10 and 11. These look great on you and surprisingly feminine. of course, you have great legs, too! My youngest turned 20 yesterday. Getting together with him last night at college was the best thing all week.

Thank you for a delightfully positive post,
I used to write down 5 things every day that I was grateful for when I kept a gratitude journal. It was very empowering.
The sheep image is adorable :-)

Good luck to Tori!

Thanks for sharing news about Tori! She is a lovely young woman, and I hope her peers look at her and take note.

I think it was St. Francis of Assisi who developed a habit to reflect each day the one moment he felt closest to God that day and the moment he didn't. I try to incorporate that idea into my daily prayers by expressing thanks for the good things in my life: safety, health, shelter, love, purpose. I also candidly look at negative things in my life, like relationships or a problem or a lack of discipline in a particular area, and ask for help. How do I turn this seemingly negative thing into an opportunity to be better, or sometimes just to let go.

As for this week, I am so happy that the audit I am co-managing is nearly over! I've also seen progress from ridding my body of Minnesota bloat, and I received a clean bill of health from the dentist and the esthetician. Clean teeth and skin!

Your new shoes are great, love them. Can't wait to know if Tori was elected Homecoming Queen! She is a beautiful girl. This week, well...I've been crazy busy with work, even more so because I am now on VACATION! My husband and I leave early Monday for a week on the East Coast in Boston, on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard. So YAY! The other cool thing about this week--we began planning our middle daughter's wedding (will be in May 2013). She and boyfriend have been together 8 years, it is time. Her excitement is adorable, and catching!

Love your new oxfords and congratulations to Tori. It was a very good week in many ways, and I did use to keep a gratitude journal - think I will start again. It made a very positive impact on my daily attitude. Thanks for the reminder.

Yay for sweet Tori!! I was on our basketball homecoming court and thoroughly enjoyed the experience even though I didn't win. :D

My most positive news from last week is that I started a Creative Writing Boot Camp at the Spiritual Living Center of Atlanta that will run for six weeks on Thursday evenings. Our instructor's first challenge to us is to complete 3 20-minute free writes each day, which is a big change for me - so far I've hit the goal for three days (and already have the first session of today tucked under my belt)! In a happy coincidence, the instructor is a high school/college friend of mine with whom I'd lost touch for several years - it's lovely and inspiring to see him thriving in his element at the professor's podium!

Congratulations for Tori! That is a really great acknowledgement for all her positives.

I've been told by another mum that there is a special place in heaven for me after last week.

My daughter went to a state competition for athletics and we took along a fellow competitor and good girlfriend of hers. When a teacher rang me and asked, I also agreed to taking a boy, much to my daughter's dismay. Many others had refused to take him and he had no other way of getting there as his own parents couldn't get away from work. I had no idea of what I was getting myself into. But I was Ok with it, being a teacher, I can pretty much cop anything from kids and deal well with it. He turned out to be quite different from the mature girls and had some very unusual social skills (which I worked on a bit!). At the end of the day though I am really happy that we were able to help this kid and family out and give him a go instead of saying no and feeling bad forever.

He told me that he'd had some of the best times of his life with us on this trip and he'd do anything to do it all again. Made me cry! I think that this experience of helping out someone in need and tolerating his differences has been a pretty big positive for us all.

I Have been trying to be more positive lately and I am glad my my son only needed his cast for 4 weeks instead of 6 to 8 weeks. It's has been hard for a kindergartener and he has been a trooper. Tori looks beautiful and I love your oxfords - great purchase:)

@A Texas Gal That is so great that your significant other and you play a game that focuses on the positive! Each night at dinner, we all must take a turn saying what we are most thankful for the day before we can eat. It's one of our family traditions.

I remember my mom revealing some things about her past - pre-kids - when I was in my late teens. I think it does make the relationship stronger and it's important for kids to see their parents as real people.

@Pam @ over50feeling40 Thank you, Pam! I love Positively Fridays. And I really love my shoes - think I may wear them tomorrow night to Tori's Homecoming game where we suspect she might be crowned queen!!

Adrienne said...

@Lisa I won't ever look at cauliflower the same way again! I will always think of them as little sheep.
My shoes were a great purchase. I wore them over the weekend and got lots of compliments. And they are very comfortable. The color goes with everything.

Adrienne said...

@lovesjetlag How wonderful that you sold four pieces at the consignment shop. I hope you find some things that you like for fall and winter with your sales.

My oxfords are getting a real workout. I love, love, love them. The most comfortable shoes I own. Am thinking about getting a black pair, too.

Yes, your little boy is way too young to hear stories about his mama. But maybe someday you'll want to share a few with him. I know it's different for sons and mothers though.

Adrienne said...

@Gracie's Mom I have heard of Cavalia. I think they were in San Francisco last year - remember seeing lots of cool commercials for it. How wonderful that your friends bought you a ticket - and a premium one at that! They are very thoughtful and generous. Real keepers!

Cashmere for $20-$30!!! Where do you live? I am hopping a plane and I'll be there Sunday :) And a free one to boot? That is really something.

I love pesto and made huge batches myself a couple of years ago when I had a big herb garden. I also heard that you should omit the parm when freezing. I didn't hear that until after I made it with the cheese and it actually still froze okay. But I am sure it's better to do it without the cheese.

I love Maine Coon kitties! They are so majestic and I love their long hair and stripes. I am glad to hear she is feeling better. Hope she continues to improve.

Very kind of you to help your friend during a difficult time. You seem like a very thoughtful and giving person and a good friend. Thank you for sharing all of your positives! xo

@vintagefrenchchic Heather,

Happy to hear your etsy and eaby time is paying off for you. I know how tedious it can be and how patience plays a huge part in success. Good for you for making some sales!

Lucky you that you're into fall clothes. It's cooling off but still warm enough during the late morning and afternoon to wear shorts. So my fall stuff stays put in the other room.

I have not been reading blogs AT ALL. Which is unfortunate because I am missing out on all the fun. I am hoping to get back into it soon...like tomorrow :)

Want to see those new shoes....are the ballet flats capped toe?

Great news about your folks moving closer. That will make for shorter but more frequent visits.

Love paid of credit cards....my favorite kind.

And thank you for including reading my blog as a positive. Well, I can say that hearing from you is one of mine.
Hugs, A

@LRS4AMANDA I think Tori has suspected a few things about me but never enough to ask. I am a pretty open person to begin with but I edited myself around the kids where I thought I needed to. Like your mom, I was no angel either. But that is the way we learn things...at least it is for some of us. I had to find things out for myself rather than listen to people in my life in the position of authority. Does that make me stubborn?

@Anonymous Let's see...how does one describe a Homecoming Queen. She is much like a Prom Queen, if you know what that is. Except a Homecoming Queen is announced the big game (Homecoming game) at the beginning of the football season.
Students nominate a few young ladies that they would like to see as "queen". The votes are compiled, then the winner is announced. Admittedly, it's a popularity contest. Thankfully, Tori seems very humble about the whole thing and is not letting any of it go to her head.
I hope that helps you understand what a Homecoming Queen is.

Adrienne said...

@catherine Happy birthday to your son!
I am between a 10 and an 11 too. My biggest problem is filling up a shoe. I am probably a 10.5 narrow. Good luck finding that anywhere in a cute shoe!
Zappos is great because they have free shipping - both ways. So I often order several styles and just keep one. The only hassle is printing out the label and dropping it off at a UPS store. Easy!

Adrienne said...

@Leigh Powell Hines (Hines-Sight Blog) She is a very, very popular babysitter around here. She has about 8 or more families that regularly call her....and she rakes in the cash! I am sure that if we lived in Raleigh, she would happily sit your cute kids :)

Adrienne said...

@hostess of the humble bungalow Shawn Achor advises that we write down three things everyday. I am not that disciplined yet - but if I ever found myself with a case of the blues or that I was focusing too much on negative stuff, I would try it.

We will know tomorrow night if Tori is queen or not! Either way, it will be a wonderful evening!

Adrienne said...

@Rebekah Bonde You're right, Rebekah, we must also take stock of the negative things in our lives as a way to grow or to choose to let it go, as you say. I am in complete agreement with you on that. Since I wrote this post, I have been making some big changes in my life. If I mentioned them all, most people would think they were just a bunch of small things. But to me, they aren't small at all. Little tweaks to the way we live our lives can be difficult!

That is great news that you're back to eating healthy and that your project has come to an end. Don't you love getting your teeth cleaned? I wish I could go every month!

@Michelle Roebuck That is fantastic, Michelle! I wonder what pieces of writing will come out of your bootcamp? That is a great bonus that your instructor is a friend. But does that make you hold back a little since you have that familiarity with him?

I have started working with my life coach again and one of the things I am working on is writing. I must write 300 words per day and email it to her for 30 days. I am on day 2! It's not easy to just sit down and start writing without a prompt or anything! But so interesting what comes out.....seems that we are on similar journeys right now.
