The Rich Life On a Budget

Floral pants, giving compliments and other things

If you celebrated Christmas, how was your day?

Ours was fun, but a bit exhausting. We woke up very early, opened gifts with the kids, made breakfast and cleaned up before heading down to my father-in-law’s, an hour away, for a family get together. We didn’t arrive home until well after 9:00 that night, tuckered out.

It’s been quite a while since I have written a fashion post. I thought I’d show you the pants I wore Christmas day.

By the 25th, I was over wearing the holiday garb I’d been donning for weeks and decided to wear these floral pants instead.

I purchased a pair for my stepdaughter, Tori, for Christmas. I thought they were fun and I’d been wanting to try the floral pants trend myself, so I put a pair in the checkout basket for me too.

I’m wearing a striped button down and a very, very old Ralph Lauren navy jacket I bought in the early 1990′s. The style might be a tad dated, but I don’t care. I like the cut and the quality has allowed me to wear it every season for nearly 20 years.

Do you wear floral pants or pants with dots, plaid or other patterns? I’m seeing them everywhere these days.

26 Acts of Kindness is still going strong, but a little slow. I am at #16 of 28 (I chose to do 28 acts rather than 26).

Janice from The Vivienne Files left a comment on the 26 Acts post that has stuck in my head. She said:

And let’s all make a point to try to compliment every beautiful woman we see… wait – that would be EVERY woman! Let’s all try to be kinder to each other, and express our affection, admiration, and care to each other more consistently.”

Yesterday, I dropped off bags of unwanted things to the Goodwill trailer up the road. A woman in her late 60′s sits in the cold trailer in the middle of a field day in and day out, taking donations. I am always getting rid of things so I see her regularly.

Janice’s comment came to my mind when I handed the woman my bags. I told her I loved her hair and that it was very pretty. She muttered a quiet “thank you”, smiled and walked back to the trailer. I don’t know if she cared about my compliment to her or if it improved her morning in any way, but it improved my day.

Often, I see women who look lovely. I think they are wearing a great scarf or beautiful coat, or have a beaming smile, or a great posture but I don’t verbalize those thoughts.

From now on, I will start complimenting other women, both the women I know and the women I don’t. Because we could all use a little verbal sunshine.

From Positive Provocations. A great post to read if you need
help giving or receiving compliments.

The start of a new month is right around the corner which means it’s time for another “How I Wear My” post!

January’s theme is an easy one: Black and White. My guess is that all of us have some black and white in our wardrobe. Why not put something together and join me and Jill for our upcoming post?

Send me – or Jill – a photo of yourself wearing your favorite black and white look by end of day January 2nd to be featured. Please be sure to include a line or two about your look.

XO,
Adrienne

    Adrienne -
I appreciate your reminder about giving compliments.

A few years ago I was in a lobby, waiting, when a striking woman entered the room. We didn’t speak but after about 10 minutes she turned to me and said,” You are a beautiful woman.”

I was flattered and stunned. “I think it’s important,” she said, “for women to tell other women the beauty we see.”

She left and I’ve never forgotten her, or her words.

Cute florals and I love your little jacket. I always give compliments whether I know the person or not, if I see something I genuinely like the look of. Why not? You never know, you might just make someone’s day!

I was at Starbucks on the weekend, waiting in line, and I was wearing one of my winter hats, it’s a cloche style hat. I was zoning out and in my own little world when out of the blue, a woman came up to me and said she just loved my hat and I looked great in it. That made my day!

I like your Ralph Lauren jacket and the floral pants look good on you.

I love your blazer and the floral pants- I would love to wear polka dot bottoms or florals, but no luck yet on finding a flattering pair. You dress so chic and classically you’re a good reminder on how much mileage a great classic can give you.

I love to compliment others- build the world up I say.

And I need to do a black/white outfit stat so I can join in the fun with you and Jill!

Your Christmas day sounds a little familiar!

We had Nick and Amanda over for breakfast, opened presents and then in the afternoon headed up to Nick’s aunt and uncle’s cabin about a 40 min. drive from here. What a beautiful place! It’s huge, but it is their actual home… Tony said he felt like we were in a ski lodge. There were probably about 30 of us, and we really had a wonderful time getting to know Nick’s family better. They were so welcoming. We didn’t get home until 9:00 as well.

I love the pants! I’ve seen them in the store but not sure if I’m too old to wear them! Ha Ha.

    Have a great weekend!

The pants look great and I love the jacket. Classic, not outdated at all. I think I’d try brown/cognac shoes with the outfit though, because I think they’d make the pants a little more sophisticated. My mother always gives random compliments to people, and I’ve always felt embarrassed by it, but your post, and the other comments give it a new perspective to me. However, you look fantastic as always, and maybe for the summer I will try a pair of floral jeans, but I kind of think I’m too old.

Compliments ARE important.. thank you for the reminder!

I agree.. out with all the holiday attire and in with something fresh. I do like the patterned, flower pants however I’ve yet to get a pair. Maybe I’ll come across some at a post holiday sale? ;)

Enjoy your weekend and Happy New Year!

    Adrienne,

I think this outfit is adorable on you. I don’t wear floral pants; they don’t flatter my curves at all. Even when I was 10 lbs lighter, I didn’t feel comfortable in them. (Consequently, I am working on losing the extra 10 lbs I’ve gained over the past two years….I want to look better in my ballroom competition dresses).

I don’t think the jacket looks dated, I think its a classic and I really like it.

Compliments are important. I think perhaps the woman you complimented is not used to hearing compliments. I’m sure it meant something to her, but she didn’t know how to respond. Either way, it was a nice thing for her to hear….and to be recognized as more than just someone who takes in the donations, to be noticed as a person.

I love those pants, so groovy and comfy I bet! I always try to compliment people (Ladies, men and even my school students )who I believe have made an effort to present well. That bit of extra time they have spent on doing their hair or putting an outfit togther should be acknowledged. But often I come across people who have made no effort and I struggle to find anything to compliment. I will look deeper I think!
    Almost happy new year!

What great pants!!! You look adorable as usual!

I love this post and will remember to share a kindness with others to honor it!!!

Happy New Year, I hope your New Year is filled with blessings and joy!

Love the pants, they remind me of something we might have worn in our younger, more daring days. Also, love the blazer, classic never goes out of style, if you ask me. Christmas was wonderful but that night Frank came down with a nasty stomach virus that was passed around on Christmas Eve. He spent the next 4 days of his/our vacation week in bed. Not fun!

Love your jacket ! Isn’t it great having something you have had for so long and it still looks fabulous? Pants are cute too!

I feel lucky I came from a family who compliments a lot so it was natural for me as I got older. I have to get in the habit again. I like the idea of doing it daily. Why not spread happiness?

Wishing you the happiest of New Year’s dear Adrienne!

I love giving other people (usually women) compliments. Some seem taken aback, some brush me off, but hey, it could make someone’s day is what I figure because it’s happened for me.

Can’t get into the floral trend. I’m girly, but those would never look good on me and wouldn’t fit my style. However, I think the jacket was a good choice to pair with them. And seriously, have I missed a post about what you and Tori use on your hair because every photo both of you always have gorgeous hair!

Did you cut your hair? It looks so good! Also I love the floral pants with the cropped Ralph Lauren peacoat. Divine! I was giving compliments out like crazy at Bloomingdale’s while I was working there over Xmas. I’m sure some ladies thought I was crazy but I didn’t care, I gave out at least 3 compliments a night to coworkers or customers, usually both. I love to compliment ladies! XO, Jill

You look gorgeous! I love floral and patterned pants too! I have just had a haircut and now looking at your long hair drooling. It suits you so well.
Happy New Year my friend! All the best for 2013!

I think it’s great to share compliments more often. However, it’s problematic that we almost always focus on looks when complimenting women and girls. That’s harmful and it sends the message that physical beauty & attributes are all that matters.

Instead, why not compliment other things that matter… being smart, being good at one’s job, being helpful, being a good parent or friend, being brave or bold, etc.

  17. Adrienne Shubin

@margot I agree, Margot, wholeheartedly. We need to look beyond the surface stuff. What I guess I was referring too was complimenting a stranger – someone we see in the supermarket or dry cleaners. Someone we don’t know – hard to give them compliments about being a good parent or friend, etc.
But the people we do know deserve compliments such as the one’s you have listed…and the people who work hard to provide us goods and services.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment and reminder to stretch beyond compliments that are physical.
